Terrapin Social Sports

A Better Way To Play

Join us in Summer 2024 for the inaugural season of Terrapin Social Sports!

What makes us better?

  • Great Facilities: All games will be played on the University of Maryland campus in RecWell facilities. Our air conditioned facility boasts 6 volleyball courts on a floating hardwood court - it flexes just like professional sports arena floors!
  • Great Staff: Terrapin Social Sports is managed by RecWell’s full time professional staff and highly trained on-site employees. We do this for a living and we take great pride in our work. All on-site employees, including referees, participate in extensive classroom and on-court training. Officials are regularly evaluated by trained on-site supervisors. You can expect clear and prompt communication, easy to find schedules and standings online, and outstanding customer service from our team.
  • Great Sportsmanship: We want our participants to play hard and have fun. Sportsmanship is a priority in our leagues and each team will receive a sportsmanship score for each game, which may factor into advancement into and ranking in the playoff bracket. Those individuals displaying inappropriate conduct will be removed from the league.

We’re open to all adults, 18 years and older - whether or not you are or have ever been affiliated with UMD. Come join other community members, alumni, students, faculty, and staff in a better way to play social sports.

Registration begins on Wednesday April 24, 2024 at 3pm

Terrapin Social Sports utilizes online registration through the IMLeagues website. For team sports, captains will be required to choose the league, level of play, and day/time of regular season games at the time of registration.
Registration Procedure:

  1. Team Captains shall SIGN UP and LOG IN to IMLeagues.com/TSS (this can be done in advance of the registration period)
  2. Navigate to the sport for which you wish to register
    1. Select the league/level for which you wish to register
    2. Select the division (day/time) for which your team is available
      1. The day and time is listed in the division name and refers to the time your team will play  for the first three weeks of the season (regular season). For example, “MA1Sun2” refers  to a division in the Mixed Gender A league that will be scheduled to play Sundays at 2pm. All  times listed are “pm”
    3. Create team.
      1.  Indicate your team name
      2. Select your communication/reminder preferences
      3. Click “create team”
  3. Upon registration, captains will receive a confirmation email. If you do not receive the email,  please verify the email address listed on your IMLeagues.com account/profile page. The Terrapin Social Sports office communicates with captains primarily through email; therefore an  accurate email that is checked frequently is important.

Sports offered in Summer 2024: 6v6 Volleyball

Leagues offered: All leagues offered will be Mixed Gender (formerly known as "Co-ed")

  • Competitive "A" is for those teams who have some players who played competitive volleyball in high school or college (including "Club" volleyball)
  • Recreational "B" is for teams with limited organized participation experience and those looking to just have fun.

League/Schedule Format:

  • Exact league format will be dependent upon number of teams registered.
  • Select day of play upon registration (Wednesday or Thursday evenings).
  • We anticipate teams will play 6-7 weeks of round-robin format play. This will include 2 games a night (double-header format) between the hours of 5:30pm-9:00pm.
  • Single elimination playoff following round robin play. Top 2/3 of teams (based on record and sportmanship) advance to playoffs. Exact format to be determined by number of teams
  • No games the week of July 4

All games will be played on the University of Maryland campus in University Recreation & Wellness Facilitites

We anticipate during the summer of 2024, all volleyball games will be played at the Reckord Armory. Located off Route 1, between the Mitchell and Lee Buildings, the Armory is a 6 court (4 basketball/ 6 volleyball), climate-controlled open gym space located in the heart of campus.

On campus parking is available after 4pm in the adjacent "C" lot. Please note, on-campus parking is closely regulated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is the responsibility of individual participants/drivers to adhere to posted parking lot signs and regulations. Terrapin Social Sports is not responsible for tickets, impound, or other parking fines.

Every team is responsible for the conduct of its players and followers/spectators. Any conduct judged as detrimental to the participants, program, or any particular contest, may result in loss of the contest (forfeiture), suspension of an individual player, suspension of the entire team, or other appropriate action as deemed necessary by game officials, Terrapin Social Sports, or RecWell staff.

Harassment (verbal or otherwise) including sexual, racial, ethnic, or religious that causes injury, distress, emotional or physical discomfort, will not be tolerated. Terrapin Social Sports will vigorously enforce the following policy to ensure that ALL participants feel welcome and enjoy the full benefits of a recreational activity.

Each team will be given a sportsmanship rating for each game. The rating will be given by the game officials on a point scale. Teams must have a 3.0 average (on a 4.0 scale) to be eligible to participate in the playoff tournament. Teams must maintain a 3.0 average during the playoff tournament or face possible elimination. The following sportmanship rating will be used for all Terrapin Social Sports games:

  • 4.0 Good Conduct and Sportsmanship: Players cooperate fully with the officials and other team members. Players are under control and not excessively fouling or contacting one another. No verbal warnings are issued to the players by the officials. The captain calmly converses with officials about rule interpretations and calls. The captain has full control of the team.
  • 3.0 Acceptable Conduct and Sportsmanship: Team members verbally complain about some decisions made by the officials and/or show minor dissension (verbal or demonstrative) which may or may not merit a technical foul, yellow card, or equivalent. A team that receives one or two technical fouls (or equivalent) cannot receive higher than a 3.0.
  • 2.0 Below Expectations for Conduct and Sportsmanship: Team members verbally complain about many decisions made by the officials and show verbal or demonstrative dissension towards officials and/or opposing team or teammates which merit technical foul(s), yellow card(s), or equivalent, multiple penalties or an ejection (due to unsportsmanlike conduct) cannot receive higher than a 2.0.
  • 1.0 Poor Conduct and Sportsmanship: Teams constantly verbally complain to the officials and/or opposing team from the playing surface or sidelines. At least one unsportsmanlike conduct ejection has taken place and multiple unsportsmanlike fouls, technical fouls, or yellow cards are given. The team captain exhibits little or not control over teammates or themselves. A 1.0 rating is given to a team when members persist in arguing with an official, profane language is used, and the captain does not control the actions of the team, fans, and/or spectators. Teams that receive a 1.0 rating must meet with the Terrapin Social Sports league coordinator prior to their next game.
  • 0.0 Unacceptable Conduct and Sportsmanship: Team is completely uncooperative. Captain has no control over teammates or themselves. Any team causing a game to be stopped, or forfeited other than by not showing, or receives multiple ejections/red cards shall receive a 0.0 rating. A 0.0 is given when multiple yellow cards, technical fouls, two or more ejections are issued, a team fails to assist in removing an ejected player from the playing area, warnings by the officials are ignored, there is a fight or attempted fight, or if a player makes unnecessary contact with an official. Teams that receive a 0.0 must meet with the Terrapin Social Sports league coordinator prior to their next game.
